Rails Around the Globe (often shortened to RATG) is a new competition which is at the center of Railway Trip. A notable participant in the race is Thomas.

Plot[]

Rails Around the Globe is organized by Jack Bluebell to promote his clean coal and water, Puffanol. The competition reunites the 25 best race engines of all race types to determine the world's fastest engine. The event is composed of three races: Japan, Italy, and London.

Rails Around the Globe is the target of a plot to sabotage the race directed by the evil weapons designer Professor B. The British master spy saddle tank engine Hubert Hitchhiker discovered the conspiracy and organized himself to stop it.

First Leg: Japan[]

The RATG started off with a welcome party in the Tokyo's Yamanote Line Yards, where Jack Bluebell officially introduced the racers and his competition to the world. The following day, the first race took place at night in the Oigawa Railway Ikawa Line.

Ashima, the favorite for the competition, was unable to keep up in the hill section, which Thomas used to his own advantage to get in first position for most of the race. However, Thomas made a major error after misunderstanding his pit crew chief Hiro, enabling Ashima to take the lead in the final minutes. After 52 laps completed in 48 minutes and 26 seconds, Ashima narrowly beat Thomas and took the first position. Raul came in third place, followed by Yong Bao in fourth, Connor in fifth, Carlos in sixth, Caitlin in seventh, Axel in eighth, Russell in ninth, and Gerald in tenth. Three race engines, Vinnie, Shane, and Frieda suffered severe boiler explosions and failed to finish the race. The inexplicable accidents raised questionings on whether Puffanol was to blame, something Bluebell vehemently denied.

Second Leg: Amalfi Coast[]

The second leg took place in Porto Corsa, Italy, five days later. Bluebell claimed an independent study had shown Puffanol was harmless, and in spite of the incidents of the previous race, maintained it as the race's fuel.

This time around, Ashima and Thomas battled the entire race for first place. In the closing laps of the race, Raul and Carlos suffered severe boiler failure and crashed near each other as they passed through the casino bridge. Shortly after, Yong Bao's boiler blew up and he skidded out of control, ensuing a huge pile-up involving, Vinnie, Frieda, Shane, Gina and Axel.AodhanMiguelJukka, Marshall, Russell, Flying Scotsman, Gerald, Shane, Kentaro, Gustavo, Tomoko, Connor, Caitlin, RajivIvan, Étienne, and Kentaro avoided the wreck.

After 60 laps completed in 55 minutes and 18 seconds, Thomas and Ashima reached the finish line again side by side, but this time, Thomas won. However, his victory was overshadowed by the catastrophe that had involved most of the racers, and the race was a complete disaster. At this point, the public had no doubt that Puffanol was responsible, leading to a massive outcry. Bluebell, apparently devastated, announced that Puffanol would not be required for the final race. However, Thomas, against all odds, stated he would use Puffanol anyways.

Third Leg: London[]

All race engines had recovered from their previous problems and were able to participate in the final race in London, England. As both Ashima and Thomas had won one race and had been the runner-up in the other, this race was going to decide who was the champion. Queen Elizabeth II herself and other dignitaries including City of Truro attended the event. All race engines used conventional coals, while Thomas remained the only racer to use Puffanol. Hidden in The Steelworks, the lemons unleashed the full power of the electromagnetic pulse on Thomas, but much to their surprise, nothing happened. They switched to plan B, which consisted of getting Hiro, on whom a bomb had been secretly implanted, to reach Thomas, so that Thomas would be unwittingly killed by his best friend. Hiro entered the racing railway lines and rushed to King's Cross in order to warn the Steam Team and the Sodor residents that there was a bomb planted somewhere in the station. Thomas noticed him and tried to reach him in order to apologize, as the bomb was planted on Hiro's headlamp, he tried to stay away from Thomas by driving away and accidentally entering the racing railway lines. Thomas reached to Hiro's rear coupling at the precise moment Hiro activated his rocket boosters, sending both trains out of the racing railway lines and into the busy railway at a tremendous speed.

Later, the duo came back, this time in flight, and landed in front of York Station. The crowd of engines realized in horror that Hiro had a ticking time bomb planted on his headlamp, and a great confusion ensued. Nevertheless, Hiro succeeded to publicly expose Bluebell as the mastermind behind a conspiracy surrounding Rails Around the Globe. Due to the suspended London Race, the 4th Rails Around the Globe ends up in Thomas' hometown, Sodor.

Racers[]

Other Engines[]

These engines did not participate in Rails Around the Globe, which were Edward, Henry, Gordon, James, Percy, Toby, Emily, Whiff, Flynn, and Belle are the only engines who are only served for watching the race in King's Cross. Philip only participated the race in Sodor, but it was respectively now "Rails Around Sodor". Hiro volunteered as a crew chief while Nia, Rebecca, Logan and Charlie only volunteered as race officials throughout the races, but Hiro dropped out after Thomas blaming him for losing the first race at his homeland. Gordon takes over Hiro and retained his Shooting Star form, but worn his headset which lets him serve as a crew chief to Thomas.

Aftermath[]

Following Hiro's revelations in London, Rails Around the Globe, now seen as the massive scam it is, was simply left without an end and no winner was declared. Bluebell was arrested by the British police, while Hitchhiker, the Steam Team, Whiff, Flynn, Belle, Victor, Kevin, Logan, Rebecca, Nia, and the British army neutralized the other Lemon leaders, including Professor B, Q. Javier Köf, Ashton Schönbrodt, Daniel Knight and Brendan Rivaro. Bluebell's conspiracy had been a failure, and precipitated in the downfall of the Lemon organization.

Some days later, all former Rails Around the Globe race engines were invited by Thomas to a friendly race set in the Island of Sodor, Rails Around Sodor, in order to give Rails Around the Globe a more proper ending. The winner wasn't revealed, although it could be implied that either Thomas or Hiro won the race.

Trivia[]

  • Rails Around the Globe is based off the World Grand Prix from Cars 2, where the racers compete in three countries.
  • Thomas gained proper racing colors instead of his useless colors since The Great Railway Show.
  • Ashima, Gina and Frieda burns coal throughout the race.
  • Caitlin and Connor are both only American engines who don't have their appearances modified prior to joining the race, but only wear their RATG badges on the sides of their cabs, "Rails Around the Globe" on the sides of Caitlin's running plate and Connor's boiler, and "Powered by Puffanol" on the sides of their tenders.
